I’ve been looking at the front of this cover for months now at work and even ventured to listen to a couple sample tracks, but none of them caught my ear. One night some fuzzed-up, gauzy voice started playing over the speakers as the store was empyting out. It always kind of feels dreamy to be in such a big space with all those flourescent lights buzzing and the light echoes and shimmers stuttering so softly in this track accentuated that. Hella psych-pop.
The Youth – MGMT
MGMT [originally The Management] is Brooklyn-based duo that released their debut album digitally in 2007 and then on CD and LP at the beginning of this year. Oracular Spectacular is a sound and space experiment. There’s been a lot of aural manipulation done to the tracks and vocals to give listeners a kind of synethestic experience: it’s almost like looking through gauze or seeing fuzzy doubles. It’s really very pretty. Songs like Broken Social Scene’s “Anthems For A Seventeen Year Old Girl”, All-Night Radio’s “Sky Bicycle” or Spiritualized’s “Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating In Space” come to mind somehow.
